This poem, "The Taking," was written in response to reading the depositions of five Brazilian Indian girls who told their Federal Police about how a North American named "Richard" tricked them to come "clean and cook" on his fishing boat. When they got there, the underage girls found they were to get drunk and have sex with North American tourists. One girl was left pregnant after one such trip, at age 13. It has not yet been determined if these were members of the Shriners' secret sub-group, the Royal Order of Jesters, though court depositions from fishing guides testified that the Jesters asked to be called "Masons" and for girls over 13. This news report indicates that FBI agents have travelled to Brazil and interviewed the girl who was left pregnant.
"The Taking"

River eels scream
Jungle Daughters cry
Flows of shame
From each eye.
River Teardrops
Cultural pollution
Hypocrites all
No, no solution.
Futures stolen
Girl mothers show
No more school
No more hope.
Whispering winds
Signal shifts
Freely now
Share our gifts.
